Would you agree that the post office contributes to land fill issues?

Consider this.
Bulk mail which comes to everyone is sent at a lower postal rate than regular mail. Doesn’t this add to the high rate of junk mail?
Doesn’t the fact that nearly all of it winds up in land fill?
Mail order is definately big business. And everytime they raise the rates, we have to pay for it.
The delivery people have to carry much more weight than is necessary. And they have to have more people for the volume of junk. What do you think?
Shouldn’t the bulk mailers have to pay the weight of thier materials just like the rest of us?

Yes, I think junk mail contributes to land fill issues, not the post office, they just deliver it(they’re job). But ultimately it is our responsibility to recycle the things that we are throwing away. Everyone has got to start taking responsibility for there own actions and quit passing the blame on to someone else. If we don’t, our children and grandchildren are not going to have a planet to live on.

Bulk mail has to be sorted in a special way before it arrives at the post office – so it cuts down on the P.O.’s work. Also – it is sent more slowly than regular mail. Therefor, the post office charges less to send it.

The P.O. is a business. It is no longer run by our government. They are trying to make money – just like the next guy. Bulk mail is a huge market for them to tap into – and they do.

If you believe that bulk mail is contributing to the land fill issues – the people for you to talk to are the politicians – so you can get the laws changed.

I don’t know about you – but all of my junk mail ends up in the re-cyle bin….. not the landfill.

Actually – my understanding is that the biggest contributers to landfills are phonebooks and disposable diapers.

Bulk mail is sent at cheaper rate because it takes advantage of the discounts given for things like 11 digit zip code and bulk drops at regional mailing facilities. Also the USPS is one of the biggest recyclers in the entire country. To reduce junk mail I would allow people to access an interactive site at the DMA (direct mailers association) and that way they can receive only the advertising they want and/or need. The bulk mailers have an enormously powerful lobby and with the current structure of the rate boards a good deal of legislation would be needed to make things right.
