Bulk mail Unsubscribe scams?

Posted by admin under Spam Bulk Mail

TuesdayStar asked:

So I have had the same email address since I was 15 and needless to say I get a great deal of bulk mail, so a couple weeks ago i had the stupid bright idea to start unsubcribing from some of my bulk mailers, just a few a day, with the hope of someday eliminating this annoying mystery mail that who knows how or when i enlisted for.

Now, since I started i am getting a variety of very odd mailers on my regualar mail folder, most appear to be normal ad spam for obscure internet services and companies as well as those spam emails that just have a long list of addresses similar to mine in the to list.

The really creepy ones (and excuse me for being a dork and not knowing what they are) are the one’s with only my email listed and some weird illiterate 1 or 2 line text and possibly a link (I don’t know I’ve never clicked anything but delete or SPAM) and these ones don’t even have an unsubcribe. What did I get myself into (probably in my teenage years)?
MY MAIN QUESTION HERE IS: Could these bulk spammers be taking my email address from the unsubscribe page and adding it to new lists, because it was after i started trying to unsubcribe that I started getting these mystery INBOX mailers.
Oh (sadface) I really don’t want to ditch this email as my main, I guess I will just have to deal with my (8 years worth of)stupid mistakes

Yes. Some of the unsubscribe mail actually goes to email banks. Anyone can purchase those lists. Best thing to do is have two email addresses. One for junk and the other for normal activities. Give the one for normal activities to friends. You should also be careful about chain letters even if they come from friends. I have four different email accounts.

Yes, never hit the unsubscibe for spam. That’ll just let them know you did receive it, and you’ll be put on many more unwanted mailing lists.
Just delete it. You can report it to your e-mail service and you may be able to get the sender’s address blocked.

Don’t unsubscribe. Unfortunatley, it just flags them to say Hey, there’s actually a person at this e-mail and they’ll send you more. You may need a new e-mail address or you’ll just have to keep marking them as spam
